Hey guys,

I'd like to know your opinion: do you think that computer games can be useful / developing in a way? I.e. can they help children learn more about some areas of life? For example, when someone plays a so called "strategy" where he is supposed to build and keep up a city, isn't it a simple way for a child to understand the basics of economics (taxes, profit, expenses, etc)?

Hi

Talking about computer games I think that there are pros and cons to be considerated ;

for example  some computer games can be educative and help in children learning and development in logical thinking ,also they can improve hand eye coordination , but the negative side is that  some games developed nowadays happen to be more violent and teach children that violence is an acceptable way to resolve conflicts, children are more likely to confuse fantasy violence with real world violence.

Concluding I think that they could be helful  depending of the kind of game and using them with moderation .

greetings ¡

Personally, I haven't played games for ages! They only waste my time! But the other day I've read some information that Counter Strike develops teenagers' brains more than chess do! I was shocked cause as far as I know this very game swallowed many young people (as well as lots of my friends), which is completely abnormal!

That's why I don't appreciate computer games much!

Games can be fun and helpful in learning, but it depends on what kind of games you are playing,. Nowadays, all the games are made so brutal and with lots of violence, shooting games like Counter Strikes. I used to play it for a while and got addicted for a while, but later i quit playing. It's kind of a stimulation game but practically you don't learn anything from playing too much of it.! I think these kinds of games should be kept away from underage childrens...

Games can be useful in a number of ways. I learned English while playing. They can be very addictive, however. Time passes unnoticed. In general, it depends on the person whether the gaming would enrich his life or turn out to be a massive waste of time.

In the national University of Colombia, a whole disertation paper was written with the results of a 6 months investigation about the impruvements English students/learners may got from playing video games.

One of the findings is that the gramatical structures were better understood after being seen in the instructions of how to play.

So, I'll dare to say: computer games are useful, at least to learn English.

First of all, let me say something about violence in games, for many people above named it as a negative feature. The point is that any game man ever invented, contains a great deal of cruelty in itself. Probably, this is what makes them so attractive to play. One doesn't have to look far for examples:

  • Chess teaches us to be cruel to animals and women, to disrespect and despise subordinates. Russian version of chess even accepts cannibalism - you can "eat" an officer there.
  • "Cowboys and Indians" is obviously about racism and intolerance.
  • "Cops and robbers" acquaints children with misuse of authority and hatred of police.
  • Hopscotch - don't ask me what's wrong with this game, but a lot of girls play it and then grow up heartless and bad tempered

Of course, I am not serious. But still you have to admit, there is something violent in human nature itself, something that makes the cruel computer games so appealing and interesting to that number of people. And trying to avoid these games doesn't solve the problems inside. On the other hand, isn't it better to allow kids to let off steam in the game rather than on the street?

Well, I think my opinion about computer games is clear enough already - I consider them as something strictly positive. This opinion is based on my own experience: there were three of us, three friends who met each other at the age of six and who are still together. We'd started to play games around the same age, when first Spectrums, Segas and Nintendos finally began to appear here and had been playing all our childhood and teenagehood. And this mania of games came to an end quite predictably: gradually all the games lost their attractiveness and were replaced by everyday problems, work and relationships.

And what was the result? One of us became a scientist, mathematician, who is already well-known in some mathematical circles despite his young age. Another one is a director of a firm, good leader and a very decent man. And at last, me, a mere guy who, however, is quite peaceful and happy. Looking at this, I can't see any negative effects of our gamers past, no matter how cruel were games we played. And, on the contrary, I can easily imagine what would have happened to us if we had spent our time other way those days, the way that many of our ex-schoolmates chose.
